Thyroid Parathyroid Disease

As head and neck surgeons, our physicians are uniquely qualified in the surgical removal of thyroid and parathyroid glands. Working closely with our endocrine colleagues an individualized approach is developed for each patient. Office evaluation may include a thorough history and physical exam, fine needle aspiration and appropriate imaging/laboratory studies.

Surgical treatment is based on the latest minimally invasive principles. Thyroidectomy is generally performed through a small incision in the neck based on the size of the nodule or mass to be removed. The Harmonic scalpel may be used to reduce operative time and blood loss. Patients frequently can be discharged the next morning after surgery without the need for surgical drains. If complete thyroidectomy is performed, discharge will be based on the patient’s condition and laboratory studies.

Parathyroidectomy is frequently performed for elevated calcium levels. Minimally invasive techniques frequently utilize preoperative localization studies including Sestamibi scans and ultrasound.
