Acoustic Neuromas

Acoustic neuromas (vestibular schwannomas) are benign tumors that grow on the balance nerves adjacent to the brain. Depending on the size of the tumor and a variety of other factors, these tumors may be addressed with observation, radiation, or surgery. As a fellowship-trained Neurotologist, Dr. Mason can help each individual patient decide on the best course of action in his or her particular case.

If the decision for surgery is made, a variety of surgical approaches are available. These can be performed at Baystate Medical Center, often with the collaboration of Baystate Neurosurgical Associates. For surgical approaches where hearing preservation is desired, the use of continuous nerve action potential (CNAP) monitoring is employed to help maximize the chances of hearing preservation.
